(Staff file photo/The Sun) Cal State University San Bernardino will honor a number of the top students in its five colleges during Saturday’s commencement ceremonies held at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario: • COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Pamela Buchanan and Margarita Garcia will be honored as the top graduate students at the College of Education.
Buchanan, a Hesperia resident, is the college’s outstanding doctoral student and will receive her doctorate degree in educational leadership.
• COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION The College of Business and Public Administration has named Ivette Ordoñez its outstanding undergraduate student for 2015.
“This award to me is a great acknowledgement that hard work pays off and doesn’t go unnoticed.” The San Bernardino resident said that she’s been fortunate to have had the support of several people in her life, especially from her parents, who taught her the importance of education at an early age.
“My father has been an inspiration to me,” Ordoñez said.
“Before, I never would have imagined making it this far in my life, being a first-generation Mexican-American with my primary language being Spanish, and also my parents having no educational background whatsoever,” he said.
“To me, this degree is highly important because it represents my growth in education, and the first time my father is attending a ceremony where I am moving on to pursue a higher degree.” As an undergraduate, Cruz said he decided on biological psychology because of an appreciation for scientific research and love of the scientific process.
Long, who has a bachelor of arts in history and a teaching credential from CSUSB, led a group of students that catalogued and organized photographs, artifacts and records.
They also designed and constructed museum exhibits in a building set aside on the hospital grounds to tell the story of Patton State Hospital.
In her own classroom, Garcia said she tries to implement the proper use of technology as much as possible, including software to assist and support students who struggle in math and reading.
“We are always looking for the best tools to use as teachers for various tasks,” she said, “but we also seek the best tools for our students to use.” • COLLEGE OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES Shannon Long, the outstanding graduate student, and Bryan Cruz, the outstanding undergraduate student, will both be honored during the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences ceremony.
